Yaya | Second Life Jobs or How how to Make Money in Second Life | Part 1

Second Life Jobs

I made around 50.000 L$ since Yaya was rezed the first time. Not too bad for a brand-new start on an almost free avatar.

Do you want to know how? Ok, let me start from the beginning. At first, I was looking at the different options.

Looking for a Second Life Job | What’s on Offer?

Finding an in-world job was an obvious one. When looking for a Second Life job, you first need to visit a few job board regions and join relevant groups.

That gives you an idea of what is on the market.

Here are the regions you need to visit:

Here are the groups you need to join:

Another good place to look for jobs in Second Life is the job board on the Second Life community website.

You will find that about 80% of the jobs offered are:

  • DJs
  • Hosts
  • Escort
  • Dancers

I have seen a few consulting jobs, managerial jobs, and match-makers for a dating company.

That’s it. Not that many options.

If you are new to Second Life, you will have difficulty getting any of those. Most of those jobs require some experience in Second Life. If your avatar is younger than 30 days, your chances are pretty close to zero.

I tried it.

I did send applications to become a host. That is the easiest of the three job categories.

Second Life Job Host

What is a host?

A host is a greeter and entertainer at events. There is a huge demand for hosts because almost every music club does events. Events are actually the most important marketing method for clubs in Second Life.

Hence the reason there are hundreds of job offers for hosts.

I did send about 20 applications responding to the job offers on the regions I did list.

Guess what.

I did not receive a single answer. I am pretty much sure, it has to do with the fact that Yaya was too young.

Second Life Job DJ

To work as a DJ in Second Life is probably the most attractive Second Life Job and there is also a very high demand for it. DJs also work at events and typically not for one club only.

They are freelancers and work on events for a multitude of music clubs.

Of course, working as a DJ in Second Life requires sound preparation. You need to learn how to stream into Second Life. A good headset is required as well, as you will talk in voice chat.

If you do want to become a DJ, I strongly recommend you watch this video:

Typically an event where you either are the host or the DJ goes for about two hours, sometimes three hours.

How do you make money as a host or DJ?

It’s based on tips only. It is very rare that a club owner pays you by the hour. Hence you really need to be prepared and have a nice selection of music titles or a good playlist.

Will you make a lot of money?

No. You will not. Typically a DJ makes more than the host. An average event gets you something between 1000 and 5000 L$.

But as always, good performers make good money. So you better be good at it.

I did not try that one, yet. It would take me too long to get a decent playlist together and I have zero experience in streaming into Second Life.

I might try later on though.

Second Life Job Dancer

You are basically a stripper. You entertain at strip clubs or at escort establishments chatting with guests and getting naked. This is based on tips only.

I did not try that at all. I know it is very time-consuming and makes very little money. Hence I skipped that option.

If you want to know more about that line of work, I suggest your read a thread on the forums. Here several dancers/strippers explain what it takes and how you can make money.

Second Life Job Escort Girl

This is an obvious one. You get paid for providing virtual sex.

There is a lot about this option on this blog. There are typically two options: Freelancer or working at a sex club. Find here a selection of articles that can help you get started as a sex worker in Second Life:

You charge by the hour. A good escort gets something between 1000 L$ and 3000 L$ per hour and more depending on the clientele you attract.

More on that later.

It requires a bit of an investment. You must have a stunningly sexy avatar and a selection of huds. Of course, you can always start and upgrade your avatar and inventory as you start making some money.

The Problem:

Just like a dancer, you typically spend long hours waiting for clients. That applies to escorts working in clubs as well as to those working in freelance regions.

I tried freelance whore with my brand-new avatar.

I went to a region called the hooker hotel. It is at the moment the busiest street whores region in Second Life. Traffic exceeds 60.000 at times.

But

Most of that traffic is whores looking for punters. The number of sex workers is at least ten times higher than men visiting the region to pick up a girl.

That is a lot of competition and all of the girls are damn sexy.

I was lucky.

One of the very few guys at the time approached me and asked for my rates. After a bit of chatting, banter, and agreeing on a price ( 1000 l$ for half an hour is the typical rate at Hooker Hotel), he had one last condition:

Voice verification!

I do not like to voice. But here I made an exception. I thought this was something that could set me apart from the competition.

Indeed the guy said, only very few girls are ok with voice verification (for verification of gender that is).

I did it. Just took a few minutes of talking in voice chat and he was happy.

He did not want to take a room at the hotel, instead brought me to his own skybox. He happened to be an anal lover. Most non-professional girls are not much into that, which is the reason he sometimes takes a whore from the street to his home.

Fair enough. 1000 L$ for letting him fuck my ass for a bit. But not good enough.

I did have another idea

Second Life Jobs | Promoting Myself

What if instead of applying for jobs on offer I proactively make people aware that I am looking for a job?

How?

It is actually rather easy. One of the groups I mentioned before gives you a group tag “looking for a job”. In addition, I wrote in my profile, that I would consider any offer, no matter what.

Wherever I went then, people around me would see that I am available for work.

In the following days, some people approached me, offering me a job. The first three offers were for being a model, a dancer at events, and a personal assistant.

None of those jobs actually existed. They just made them up. I even had interviews and castings with those people.

The Outcome?

The photographer simply wanted to watch and take photos of some random guy fucking me.

The woman who did offer the job as a dancer was telling weird stories about her project. She didn’t have her own location but presumably is renting a different one each time they do an event.

She even offered me 3000 L$ an hour for each event as a dancer and 4000 an hour if I have sex with guests as well. The whole thing was not really credible at all and I never was invited to such an event

The guy who wanted me as a personal assistant offered 250 L$ per hour. Thank you, but no thanks. I think he just wanted to have me around and eventually get a chance to get in my pants.

The three offers had one thing in common: It was all about sex (again). and they all wanted to get me in bed. One actually succeeded at that.

The next guy who approached me because of the tag was at least pretty straightforward. It was at the reception of a motel in a region that resembles an American desert village.

He saw the “looking for a job” tag and asked me:

“Did you consider escorting?”

“ I did, but the waiting hours are so boring and time-consuming. If it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t mind doing sex work. If somebody approached me, I would do it.

“I’d hire you straight away for a half-hour, are you interested?”

Ok, I accepted. We were about to check into a motel anyway. How convenient.

Second Life Jobs | A Real Opportunity?

Finally!

Somebody with a serious Second Life job offer approached me. A very interesting one. She worked for a real estate agency selling and renting out property around the blake sea region. My favorite region in Second Life.

We had a long talk about what is required, what the job involves, and the conditions. Basically, it is showing potential clients properties and helps them to get set up when they did rent a parcel.

I have always been curious about the real estate business in Second Life. This position would give me a decent income (wag and commissions about 30000 L$ per month) and, more importantly, give me insights into this interesting business.

We agreed that she arranges an interview with the owner. To date that is still pending. Hopefully, in one of my next blog posts, you learn more about this.

Oh wait, you might ask how did I end up with that 50000 L$ I did mention at the beginning. So far I only made 1500 L$.

You will find out in part 2 of this storyline.

  1. The low wages and what has got to be humiliating sure seem depressing.

Did you try real estate? I don\’t have jobs in my small operation but I see giant empires with hundreds of islands that have agents that show houses or merely answer questions. Is that hard to break into? No idea.

I also see these jobs among my tenants:
o Taking profile photos for people to improve their look in general
o Making any kind of photo portfolio for companies, their logos, their PR work
o RP scene makers that might be sex workers but not always
    o Re-sellers of gatchas
o Stylists who will shop for you and make up your avatar
o Live music promoters – they all have groups for the performers, event planners, advertisers
I have no idea how hard any of this is to break into. But I do see those jobs. I realize some people end up doing them only for tips, or only for free until they can somehow break into the next level.
